Hull FC and Wakefield Trinity’s Scholarship teams will take part in a series of modified games at the DIY Kitchens Stadium tomorrow evening.
The joint initiative, which has been advocated by both clubs’ youth departments and supported by the RFL, will see all fit and available players from both Scholarship programmes feature throughout the evening.
The meeting between the two sides will consist of three 30-minute fixtures, with 10-minute rest periods after each match.
Teams will be formed of ten players, with unlimited substitutions permitted.
Only maximum of two defenders will be allowed in the tackle, with the defensive onside retreat reduced from ten metres to seven metres.
Once a try has been scored, the scoring team will not have a conversion attempt and the conceding team will restart the game with a play-the-ball on the 20 metre mark.
Plus, a tap restart will get play back underway instead of a scrum.
Under these modified rules, both youth departments are confident that the games will give more opportunities to the young players to promote the fundamental skills of the modern game, alongside helping to develop their vision, game understanding and further exposure to performing under fatigue.
The ten-a-side games will be played on a full pitch, so there will be lots of space to both attack and defend. With the retreat only being 7 metres, and also limiting the tackle area to a maximum of 2 defenders in the tackle, this will create lots of different challenges to the players.
