Brett Hodgson has reflected on his side’s lacklustre performance against the Saints on Sunday afternoon.

A poor display from the Black & Whites saw the league leaders run in eleven tries in the 60-6 defeat.

“I’m obviously really disappointed with that result. I thought we started the game really well but after about the thirty minute mark, we weren’t willing to do what we needed to do when we got tired, and that showed with some cheap tries. And the start to the second-half was just poor.

“We wanted to be brave and expansive but not at the cost of giving up cheap possession. We kicked the ball on the second or third tackle a few times in the second-half, just trying to chase points rather than earn the right for them, and that comes with fatigue.

“We have players who are trying their hardest, but they’re doing it alone at moments in the game and that sees us concede points. If we defend together, we can defend those moments, But we switched off at pivotal times.

“It’s hard to process why that result happened. We’ll have some hard conversations on Monday.”

Hodgson provided an update on some of the players that left the field with injury.

“Danny (Houghton) came off with a head injury assessment, but I think he’s come through okay.

“Darnell (McIntosh) took the bodyweight of one of the players on his ankle, so I think he’s quite sore at the moment.

“Jack (Walker) felt a crack in his ankle – we don’t know the extent yet, but it doesn’t look good.”

Looking ahead, Hodgson added: “We won’t be able to get a lot of work done this week on the field with it being a short turnaround, so a lot of it will be mental resilience.”
