Brett Hodgson lamented Hull FC’s lack of ambition to play in wide areas against Castleford Tigers last night.

The Black & Whites succumbed to a 23-12 defeat at the hands of Daryl Powell’s in-form Tigers at the MKM Stadium last night.

In his post-match reaction, Hodgson was left frustrated by Hull’s conservative approach to the match in trying to play down the middle of the field too often.

“We needed to show a bit more in terms of our fight and we needed to be a little bit braver with the ball, as well,” Hodgson said.

“There were plenty of opportunities where we could have gone wide, but too many times we decided to go through the middle again.

“Even if we’re shifting the play when we’re a little bit fatigued, we’re still asking those questions and then that can open up space back in the middle.

“We hit too many leads and we approached the game too conservatively. Our attention to detail around how we wanted to play just wasn’t there.”

There’s no time to dwell on last night’s result, though, with Hodgson rallying his troops for another game on Monday afternoon.

The Airlie Birds will travel to face Salford Red Devils at the AJ Bell Stadium, hoping to complete the league double over Richard Marshall’s men.

Hodgson feels that the short turnaround could, in fact, work in Hull’s favour as the Black & Whites set their sights on putting right the wrongs from last night’s game.

“We have to. We’re hurting from that loss, but having a short turnaround will probably help us in terms of getting our heads right,” he said.

“We need to make sure that we can find that effort and attitude again that helped us through the first half of the season and hopefully that can get us the two points on Monday.

“We’ve made it [the play-offs] hard for ourselves after the result against Castleford. Had we have put in a better performance and a better effort, then sometimes you can accept defeat, but we were way off there.”
