Full-Time Hooter The Highlight Of Shaul’s Comeback

Jamie Shaul gives his reaction to Hull’s Derby victory

Jamie Shaul says the final hooter was his favourite moment on Derby Day yesterday.

The Hull-born fullback came off the bench with approximately a quarter of the game remaining as he made his first appearance since sustaining an ACL injury last October.

Exactly 307 days later, Shaul was back in action, in a close-fought Hull Derby no less.

When asked to pin down one moment as his favourite of the entire day, Shaul said: “The full-time hooter, for sure!”

“It was such a strange day for me. It felt weird waking up for the first time in ten months and having a game.

“It was also weird for me because I’ve never started a game on the bench before. I was getting a little bit nervous after about 55 minutes with the way the game was going and also thinking I might not get on, but luckily I got the nod eventually and I managed to get on the field again.

“My eyes were constantly on the scoreboard as I was about to come on – I think I would have felt a little bit more comfortable if we were 20 points in front!

“But it makes it feel that little bit sweeter to have won the game after fighting so hard for 80 minutes like that.”

The 29-year-old has now featured in his fair share of Hull derbies, but the sweet taste of victory against the bitterest of rivals never fades for Shaul.

“Obviously as a Hull lad, I know how much it means to people and it’s a class feeling to get the win,” he said.

“In the build up to the game, you try not to get drawn into all of the banter between the two sets of fans.

“I’ve got mates who support Hull FC and there’s also some who support KR. I got so many texts last week and it’s easy to get drawn into all of that kind of banter, but the important thing is that we got that win and the city is black and white.”
