Jordan Johnstone has given an insight into the influence that new head coach Brett Hodgson has already had on his career, having been previously coached by the Australian at Widnes.

Whilst coming through the ranks at the Vikings, Hodgson was the club’s Academy head coach and first-team assistant coach, with the Black & White hooker explaining that the former Wests Tigers, Huddersfield and Warrington star played a key role in his development.

Speaking to hullfc.com, Johnstone said: “During my time at Widnes, he came across as a very knowledgeable coach.

“His background in Rugby League is very impressive with everything he achieved as a player, so he was one of them blokes that when he spoke, you listened and took every little thing on board that he said because if it has worked for him, hopefully it works for you.

“He reads the games really well and I learned plenty of him during my time at Widnes. He had quite a big influence on me and showed lots of belief in me when I was coming through the ranks at that age.

“He instilled that work ethic into the group from a young age, and has helped me on the way to becoming a Super League player.”

He added: “He was also the assistant coach of the first-team when I made my professional debut, so he played a role in me getting my very first chance on the field back in 2017.”

And Johnstone explained his excitement to be working with his former coach once again, this time for the Airlie Birds.

“I spoke to him on the phone just after the announcement was made and got the chance to meet up with him at the training ground before Christmas, and it’s great to see him for the first time in three or four years.

“He has gone away and worked under one of the best coaches in the game so I’m excited to see what he has learned there and is going to implement here at Hull.”

With Hodgson’s key message on day one of pre-season being about togetherness within the squad, and an increased focus on defence in 2021, Johnstone believes the side are more than capable of buying into Hodgson’s new culture.

“We have to buy into that message, and we definitely will be doing so. Our defense wasn’t what it should be last season so we really need to build on that this season, and he is all about that. He will drive that message and we’re determined to improve.

After an impressive debut season for the Black & Whites in 2020, Johnstone is keen to build on his efforts in 2021, and expressed his excitement to play his part in a new look spine, featuring Josh Reynolds.

“I had a decent first season with the club but this year is where I want to kick on and cement my place in the team, which I am confident that I can do.

“It’s an exciting time for the club, and a great time to be playing as part of that spine . Jake Connor finished last year really strong at half-back and set up playing of tries with his link-up play.

“And Josh Reynolds looks like a top player who really plays with his heart on his sleeve and gives it his all, so I’m excited to play alongside them and hopefully we can all link up well to help get the side around the park.”
