Club Historian Bill Dalton looks back at his career…

Rob Nolan was always destined to become a Boulevard favourite after a very successful apprenticeship in the Hull FC Colts team of the mid-1980’s.

He was captain of the Colts team that swept the board in the 1987-88 season by winning the Colts Championship, the Challenge Cup and, finally, the Premiership, beating Rovers Colts by 18-14 in the final at the Boulevard on 24th April 1988.

He debuted in the first-team on 27th September in a Yorkshire Cup-tie against Featherstone Rovers.

In that initial season, under Head Coach Brian Smith, he appeared 13 times, 12 of them off the interchange bench, where his utility value became a valuable factor during his subsequent 11 year career.

He capped that initial season with an appearance at Old Trafford in the 1988-89 Premiership Final, albeit in a gallant defeat to then World Club champions, Widnes.

Rob’s brother, Gary, also joined Hull later and are part of the 31-strong team of Brothers who have played for the club.

Rob’s first-team career at Hull embraced 232 appearances and he scored 52 tries and also kicked a dozen goals.

He closed his first-grade career with a 30 appearance spell at Hull KR in the very early days of the 21s century.
