Club Historian Bill Dalton looks back at his distinguished career…

Trevor Skerrett came onto the first-class Rugby League scene in August 1974, playing for Wakefield Trinity shortly after signing from Bison Sports in Leeds.

In only his seventh game, he played in the Yorkshire Cup Final against Hull KR, alas, only to suffer a narrow defeat.

He gained caps for Yorkshire and Wales whilst at Wakefield and also made his first appearance in a Challenge Cup Final at Wembley in 1979, with Trinity going down to Widnes.

However, consolation came with his selection for the 1979 Great Britain Lions Tour to Australasia, where he gained four test caps as well as posting a further 12 matches on the tour.

He transferred to Hull prior to the 1980-81 season. The transfer fee of £40,000 was a world-record for a forward at that time.

Trevor had a career at Hull which most players only dream about. He played in nine finals, attaining winners medals in the Challenge Cup, Yorkshire Cup, and John Player Trophy as well as the 1982-83 Championship.

Some of his early games were in the second-row, but it was at blind-side prop where he really made his mark. He was a big man and well equipped to dominate the contested scrummaging existing during those years.

Arguably his greatest honour was to be named as captain of the 1984 Lions team, although, tragically, he was forced to step down from the Tour party due to injury, which dogged him for his remaining time at the Boulevard.

His final game was a week before the famous 1985 Cup Final in a loss at Wigan in the Premiership Play-Off. He had made some 154 appearances in Black & White, scoring 18 tries.

The summer of 1985 saw Trevor leave for Headingley where he played for a season before moving on to Coaching at Keighley.

Post playing, Skerrett was inducted into the Hull FC Hall of Fame and is widely regarded as one of the greatest British forwards of all-time to represent the club.
