Club Historian Bill Dalton looks back at his distinguished career…

A native of Wigan, Danny Tickle commenced his professional Rugby League career at Halifax, before returning to his hometown club in 2002.

His next move, in 2007 brought him to Hull and apart from his consistent strong displays in the right side second-row spot, became the record goal-kicking forward of all time for Hull FC. He kicked 571 goals- the nearest other forward being Lee Crooks with 389 successful conversions.

Danny made some 177 appearances in the Black & White, and in addition to his successful goal-kicks, he scored 47 tries, including two hat-tricks – against Salford on 21st February 2009 and four against Widnes on 18 March 2012. The latter saw him add nine successful goal-kicks to record a points haul of 34 – only two short of Jim Kennedy’s record set in 1920.

Despite his great goal-kicking record from the tee, however, his only single-point effort will be remembered by the FC Faithful for a long time – that dropped effort from the centre spot which landed a 27-26 comeback victory over the mighty Saints on 4th June 2010, having been 26-6 down midway through the second-half.

In his final match in Hull’s colours at the end of the 2013 season,, he landed three successful goal-kicks to equal Colin Hutton’s points total of 1,331.

He added a number of Clubs to his career portfolio, taking in spells at Widnes, Castleford, Leigh and Hull KR, for whom he kicked 10 Points in a derby match to become the highest point-scorer in the history of the Hull Derby.

Danny would end his career helping Workington Town in the 2019 season, a career in which he had achieved an appearance total of over 500 – a remarkable performance in the modern era.
