Hull Spine Gelling Well Ahead Of Season, Says McNamara

The young half discusses how confident the team are feeling

Ben McNamara says he has enjoyed playing in a new-look Hull FC spine in pre-season so far this year.

McNamara has accumulated a healthy number of minutes in Hull’s two pre-season friendlies with Sheffield Eagles and Wakefield Trinity, with the Black & Whites running out winners on both occasions.

The 21-year-old has complemented new recruit Jake Clifford nicely in the halves, with fellow Australian import Tex Hoy bringing plenty of energy out the back.

Speaking in his post-match interview with Hull FC Live, which you can watch in full here, McNamara explained how well the spine has gelled this pre-season.

“I think we’re all quite similar in the sense that we’re all unselfish and willing to run the ball, pass the ball, kick the ball, so I think we work well together when we’re on the same page like that,” he explained.

“We’re all still young, so we’re able to learn things from each other.

“I think you could see out there that the ball was in our hands a lot and we looked dangerous when we had it.”

All in all, FC ran in ten tries at the Be Well Support Stadium, with the team showing off their skills to create several four-pointers.

McNamara says Head Coach Tony Smith and his fellow coaching staff have been influential in bringing out the confidence within the players this pre-season.

“Tony’s very big on giving us the confidence and the licence to play and I think you could see that out there,” he said.

“We weren’t scared of taking risks; kicking the ball, taking on the line, finding an offload.

“Our defence underpins all of that and we managed to hold Wakefield to nil, so Tony will be really happy with that, I’m sure.”
