Hodgson: Grit & Determination Saw Us Through

The head coach was delighted with his side’s grit against Warrington

Brett Hodgson believes that his players’ grit and determination was a key factor in guiding his side to victory over Warrington Wolves at the MKM Stadium yesterday.

Hull secured two important points thanks to a late Manu Ma’u try, and Hodgson believes that the sides mental resilience, as well as their patience was behind the late try.

Speaking to hullfc.com, Hodgson said: “There was a lot of grit and determination in that performance. It’s one of the things we spoke about a lot over the weekend.

“We have to stay in the battle and build and put the opposition under mental and physical fatigue, which is possibly why we scored in the last five minutes to win the game.

“To build on a performance like that, we have to understand what we did to win the game. We’re not a team that can just turn up, score points and win early.”

Despite a recent run of disappointing results for his side, Hodgson has remained firm in his belief that his side are giving their all.

“I’d have been worried over the recent disappointing results if we hadn’t had effort, but the effort over the last few games has been there, and yesterday it was there in huge amounts,” he added.

“There was a real mental resilience on display from both sides and that was tough out there. To turn up and back up after such an emotional game is really difficult, but for us to perform the way we did is really pleasing.

“All wins are big wins, and we were really pleased to get the response we did. We haven’t been miles away over the last few games, our effort has been good but our execution hasn’t given us the chance to win games but against Warrington our execution was much better.”

Although he remained confident throughout, even the Australian admitted that his nerves were tested after Warrington lead with less than 10 minutes remaining.

“We spoke about playing the long game and that’s what we did out there. The last few minutes was a difficult watch. We needed some luck and we got it in the end,” Hodgson said.

“Every game, we’re going to have some options that we don’t take perfectly and that happened again out there. We had players that were willing to do it for the full 80 minutes and that’s really pleasing for us as a coaching staff.”
