Brett Hodgson has reflected on a disappointing afternoon at the John Smith’s Stadium that saw Hull FC’s Betfred Challenge Cup journey for 2022 come to an end.

The Giants ran out 24-16 winners over the Black & Whites, with Hull failing to get a grasp on the content throughout.

Speaking after the match, Hodgson said: “I’m hugely disappointed after that result. Our first-half didn’t set the platform for how we wanted to play and allowed them too much field position. They compete high and grind teams out and we couldn’t get into that battle.

“We overplayed our hand instead of building pressure – before the match we spoke about how important it is to build pressure against Huddersfield because it’s what they do. We didn’t play the long game and the result was indicative of that.

“We were still good enough to almost get back into the contest and I think the opportunity where we broke away and made the error right next to the line was pivotal as we’d have gone ahead. But that’s what happens if you don’t earn the right in the first part of the game.

“That wasn’t the only pivotal moment though. Collectively, we wanted to do it too easily. We moved the ball laterally which isn’t how you beat Huddersfield, you have to go through them.
