Wigan Prove Too Strong For Hull’s Academy

The report as Hull’s Academy slipped to defeat against Wigan

Match Report News

Despite taking an early lead, Hull FC Academy succumbed to 40-12 defeat against a dominant Wigan Warriors Under 19s side at the University of Hull today.

Joel Speed crossed the whitewash early on for Hull, but Reagan Sumner’s response gave Wigan the ammunition to dominate the Black & Whites youngsters.

Matty Nicholson and Brad O’Neill added two more tries before the half-time whistle sounded. Billy Cannon, Ellis Hobson, Kyle Huish and Max Wood all scored second half tries, but Jacob Hookem had the final say on the day for Hull, who will look to pick themselves up ahead of next week’s trip to London.

The Match

Hull started the game at lightening speed. A beautiful move which involved some great hands from Jude Ferreira and Davy Litten sent Speed diving over the whitewash in the left corner.

Neat footwork from Umlya Hanley wrong-footed the Hull defence and forced a 2-on-1 in the right corner. Sumner was on hand to collect the pass and hit back for the Warriors.

Nicholson handed Wigan the lead when he ran a strong line and angled his run around the Hull defenders. That was before O’Neill scored a similar try just a few minutes later to give the Warriors a stranglehold on the game heading into the break.

HALF-TIME: Hull 6-16 Warriors

The visitors picked up from where they left off at the end of the first half and opened the scoring early in the second half. Several onrushing players in Black & White jerseys led to a looping pass over the top for Cannon to stroll in at the corner.

Hobson added insult to injury when he coasted through some lacklustre Hull defending, using momentum to bounce over the try line. Huish then took on the line in confident style and snaked out an arm to ground the ball just under ten minutes later.

Wood rubber stamped the victory for the Warriors when his marauding run down the middle of the field was rewarded with a try underneath the sticks.

The Black & Whites scored a consolation try just shy of the full-time whistle, though. Hookem took the tap after a penalty and darted through a gap in the Wigan line to score.
