Hodgson reflects on Hull’s defeat to St Helens.

Brett Hodgson has taken positives from Hull’s performance against St Helens at the MKM Stadium last night, despite going down to a 42-10 defeat.

The Black & Whites found themselves well in the contest for 65 minutes, but a flurry of late tries from Kristian Woolf’s men, including a hat-trick for Jack Welsby, took the scoreline away from FC.

And Hodgson says there is plenty to be happy with from the performance having competed with the reigning Betfred Super League champions for over an hour.

Speaking after the match, in association with Jacuzzi, Hodgson said: “The scoreline is tough to take, but there was much more to like in that performance than last Thursday.

“For 55 minutes, we were in the contest, and had Bureta scored that try in the corner, the scoreline could have been much closer.

“Our discipline cost us tonight, and we weren’t strong enough to defend what comes with that. Going down to 12 men against a fresh St Helens team was always going to hurt, and conceding as many points as we did towards the end was frustrating.

“It’s a game of fine margins ultimately.”

Hodgson added: “We got some quality possession towards the back-end of the first-half, and went in at the break with some real belief that we could get a result.

“We continued that when we came out for the second-half. They threw some good shapes at us and we defended well, but ultimately the pivotal moment was going down to 12 men which allowed them to push on.”

And Hodgson praised the performances of several players, including Jacuzzi Elite Performance Man of the Match Chris Satae.

“There was a lot to like about a lot of the performances of some individuals tonight, including Chris Satae, and Mitieli Vulikjapani off the bench. Jordan Johnstone looked solid too apart from the sinbin. “

Hodgson also explained Hull’s injusyr situation that saw three key players miss out against the Saints.

“Danny Houghton and Carlos Tuimavave had knocks from the Leeds game, and Josh Bowden missed out through illness.

“Connor Wynne picked up a bit of a sternum injury during the game. It’s pretty sore at the moment so we’ll get him scanned and see how he goes.”
