Brett Hodgson reflects on Hull’s defeat to Leeds.

Brett Hodgson has reflected on last night’s defeat to Leeds Rhinos at the MKM Stadium, explaining his side played to laterally in attack.

Hull went down 22-12 to the Rhinos, who after a defensively dominated 60 minutes, scored three tries in quick succession in the final quarter of the match to claim victory.

Speaking to hullfc.com after the match, in association with Jacuzzi, Hodgson said: “I think we played too laterally in the first-half, but asked plenty of questions in the process. We didn’t managed to find a good kick at the end of our sets, or offered up a seven-tackle set to Leeds.

“In the first ten minutes of the second-half, Leeds had a period where they had five or six sets on our try-line. And eventually that had an affect on us when we got the ball back, having lost our energy and we wasn’t able to deal with Brad Dwyer when he came on.

“We have to be stronger to get through those tough periods of games.”

He added: ” We needed to play more direct and just go through them instead of trying to go around them. Sneyd, Reynolds and Wynne haven’t played together for a while and their combinations weren’t at their best, but they’ll be better for that run out next week.”

However, Hodgson explained his belief that his side aren’t too far away from a winning performance.

“We’re not far away – we were good in parts, but need more resilience when things get difficult.

“We won’t wallow in this defeat tonight because we’re not far off. We know how we can get better and what we need to do in terms of being more resilient. It doesn’t get any easier against St Helens but we have to go into the match with belief.

“Leeds defended exceptionally well too and scrambled really well, so they need to be credited for that. They’ve got some bodies back now and are only a couple of players away from their best side.”
