Andre Savelio reflects on his hat-trick performance against Leigh

Andre Savelio has reflected on his efforts in yesterday’s 64-22 victory over Leigh, with the back-rower earning the first hat-trick of his career.

Savelio scored three of the Black & Whites twelve tries against the Centurions as Hull secured their highest points tally in a league game for eight years.

Speaking on his hat-trick after the game, Savelio said: “Jake Connor did most of the work for two of my tries, with Laney supporting me for the other and I pretty much just fell over the line.

“All of our forwards graft their backsides off and Jake Connor brings us home at the end – he managed four assists in total which is an insane effort.”

On the performance as a whole, Savelio explained that the squad went into the game with the correct mindset, despite Leigh being bottom of the Betfred Super League table.

“We knew that we couldn’t be complacent and that was the message that Brett drilled into us during the week – we knew we couldn’t just turn up and collect two points, just because Leigh are bottom of the league.

“We were in the right headspace and had the right intent. We started well in the game and it went from there really.

“We were strong for 65 minutes and fell off a little bit towards the back end of the game which was a little but disappointing, but it was nice to be in a game where we led comfortably for the majority of the match rather than it be a close one like it has been for most of the year.”

Savelio also praised the impact of the players who came into the squad due to Hull’s mounting injury list that currently sees nine players unavailable for selection – in particular, the efforts of Connor Wynne.

“Every player only has two legs and two arms, and whoever comes into the squad, we trust them to do their job. Connor Wynne came in and did a hell of a job in the centres, filling some big boots from Carlos. He took his chances well.

“Connor has great reactions – when you throw balls at him in training, he always catches them. So when I passed the ball to him in the build up to the team try that Browny finished off, I was just praying he caught it, which he did and continue the play.”
