Mahe Fonua has reflected on his Man of the Match effort on Thursday evening as the Black & Whites returned to winning ways.

Fonua returned to the centre position in the absence of the inured Josh Griffin during Hull’s 30-12 victory over Castleford Tigers at the Jungle – a position he was accustomed to in his first spell at the club in 2016 and 2017.

The powerhouse back enjoyed his finest performance of the season so far, scoring twice and adding an assist to a memorable evening.

Speaking after the game, the Jacuzzi® Elite Performance Man of the Match winner, said: “Being back in the centres was a bit tough on the lungs.

“I’ve not made too many tackles this season, but it was good to have a go in that centre spot on that left edge with Manu, Sneydy and Swift.

“After a couple more weeks there and I should find my feet again.”

He added: “I’ve played there before so it’s not foreign to me, but it was just about refreshing my mind about what I need to do in that position.

“We only had one proper session in the week where I could get a run out in that spot.”

Speaking on the match itself, Fonua explained his side weren’t where they wanted to be at half-time, but a quick start after the restart fired Hull up for the rest of the match.

“We went in at the break with the lead, but we weren’t where we wanted to be. We started the second-half with a try pretty much straight away and that set us up for the rest of the game.

“It’s another game where we’ll take confidence from our defensive efforts. We took confidence going in at half-time with only six points against us. There are definitely areas to work on going forward.

“If we can clean up the errors, we’ll do ourselves plenty of favours.”

He added: “It’s tough backing up after a short turnaround and we’ve got a few players who are battered and bruised after that one.

“Thankfully we’ve got a bit longer until our next match so we’re going to have a few days off to refresh now and get as many bodies out on the paddock as possible next weekend.”
