Community Foundation’s ‘Game Plan’ To Combat Homelessness

Community Foundation to support those at risk of homelessness in Hull

Community News

The Hull FC Community Foundation is teaming up with The Henry Smith Charity to provide support for young people at risk of homelessness in the local area.

Thanks to a grant of £80,265 from the Henry Smith Charity, ‘Game Plan’ will provide enhanced support to young people aged 18-24 who are either homeless, or at high risk of becoming so across a three year period through a focus on providing activities that boost wellbeing, support personal development, and foster new social connections.

Developed using the Hull FC Community Foundation’s experience in supporting vulnerable individuals through the ‘Create’ project, the Foundation has worked with young people and local partners to offer new, scaled provision in line with the ‘Five Ways to Wellbeing’.

With activities delivered from the Foundation’s central delivery sites at the KCOM Stadium and Youth and Community Centre, qualified community instructors will lead weekly activities that support young adults to ‘Connect’, ‘Learn’, be ‘Resilient’, get ‘Active’, and ‘Give Back’.

‘Connect’ will include interventions which tackle challenges posed by loneliness and social isolation, whilst ‘Learn’ will offer opportunities to develop important life skills that promote independence, confidence and progression.

The project will offer small group and one-to-one activities that prioritise developing mental resilience, alongside regular opportunities for participants to be physically active through participation in team sports and gym based physical activity in recognition of the importance of healthy lifestyles.

‘Giving Back’ will focus on facilitating supported volunteer led activity through social action projects or structured work placements that develop work based skills and boost confidence and self-esteem.

Head of the Hull FC Community Foundation James Price said: “On behalf of the Hull FC Community Foundation and the young people who access our services, I would like to thank the Henry Smith Charity for their continued support.

“The Foundation has seen first-hand how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected young people living in our city, with those on the fringes of homelessness severely affected.

This grant will enable us to continue offering bespoke, needs led support services to these young people, supporting better wellbeing, education and employment outcomes. But most importantly, this grant will support aspirations, empowering young people to achieve.”
