Community Foundation look to tackle loneliness with more ‘coffee corner’ sessions

Community News

The Hull FC Community Foundation are aiming to tackle loneliness amongst people in deprived areas of Hull through a new project called ‘Connected By Rugby’.

‘Connected by Rugby’ will provide weekly online ‘coffee corner’ sessions for 150 people over a one year period who live within highly deprived areas of Hull.

The project will support the development of new social connections between participants and deliver improved physical and mental wellbeing outcomes.

The project will host weekly sessions using the Zoom platform where people will be invited to join, interact with their peers, and reminisce in the presence of a former Hull FC player who will share their memories.

In addition to the online sessions, the project will also produce and distribute ‘Connected by Rugby’ wellbeing packs which will include rugby league contextualised information that supports positive physical and mental wellbeing.

From the Hull FC Community Foundation, Richard Tate said: “We are acutely aware of the impact that Covid-19 continues to have in Hull, and how certain groups have been disproportionally affected.

“Having spoken to many members of our local community, we recognise that feelings of loneliness and social isolation are having a significant impact on overall wellbeing.

“Thanks to funding received through the RB Small Grant Programme, we are delighted to launch our ‘Connected by Rugby’ programme that will create positive engagement opportunities for vulnerable groups in our community.”
