In the latest of our Hull FC Women in Focus pieces, we caught up with Cassy Lawson to discuss her time playing with the club and the ambitions of the side going forward.

Tell us about how you are enjoying playing for the Hull FC Women?

I’m still really enjoying it! We have a great set up and group of girls now, we have a lot of fun when we are together and are always pushing and encouraging one and another. We have come a long way in our 2 previous seasons and learnt a lot both on and off the field. Preseason had been tough but really fun and we was on track to start our 2020 season strong!

How are you finding life and training at the moment amidst the COVID-19 pandemic?

I’m a person that really enjoys structure and routine (as well as eating out!) but I think I’m adapting well. I work for a Charity and manage our mental health and complex support services, so I am still very much working but now based from home. Training has been a big hit though as I really enjoy group training and the social aspect, but Sam has sent us programmes to do from home and we have just stated doing team Zoom training sessions which has been good fun! I also have my own trainer Josh Beet who keeps me working and accountable while the gyms are closed! But, I do miss my family, friends and being on a field with the girls and a rugby ball a lot!

What’s your goals for the new season?

To keep on improving and climb the table as a team!

You have represented Yorkshire a few times, including last season, how did you find that?

I love playing country rugby! it’s great to meet girls from other clubs, improving skills and playing at that next level. I had the honour to Captain Yorkshire in our last game, that was a very proud moment for myself, being selected over some very experienced players when it was only my second season back playing, it definitely gave me a confidence boost.

How do you measure improvement in the group, have you noticed any improvements both individually and a group?

We have come a long way over the past 2 years have and have overcome a number of issues but as a group we are in a really good place now with developments and improvements being visible both in training and in game plays. Over preseason we really bonded as a team and that’s evident in the way we play and our levels of communication and confidence on the field.

But I think the main measure of improvement and focus this year will now be how we keep the momentum going during the lock down period and how we come back when the season does start, to ensure our it plays out the way we planned.
