Marc Sneyd has provided some insight into the development of the Black & Whites’ new half-back combination between himself and new recruit Josh Reynolds.
The two-time Lance Todd Trophy winner has himself a new partner in crime for the 2021 campaign in the form of the former State of Origin New South Wales man.
And Sneyd says the duo are already forming a strong relationship on the field in pre-season, and is excited for the opportunity to line-up against the Australian when the season begins.
Speaking to hullfc.com in an interview exclusively sent to our 2021 members first, Sneyd said:
“We’re developing a good relationship. The things we’re doing with our own games seem to compliment each other.
“At the moment, we’re trying to get as much time on the field as possible working together. It looks to be going well so far, but we need some games under our belt for us to get stronger as a pair, and I’m sure that will happen when the season starts.”
With Reynolds also holding a strong kicking game of his own, Sneyd added: “That will takes bit of pressure off me this season; having Jake in that spine as well means there are three of us that can kick the ball well.
“The more of us the better and its a positive for the team to have more of that available.”
He added: “I think the difference in aggression and emotion can work well as a combination too. You have to have players like Josh in your team to fire you up as a group. But me being the kind of player that I am works for the role that I have.”
And Sneyd explained his own personal excitement to play alongside a player of the calibre of Reynolds.
“It’s going to be a good opportunity for myself personally to learn from someone like Josh – we are complete opposites but there are always little bits that you can try and take on board from your partner.
“When he is doing things on the training field, most of us stand and watch because it is pretty exciting when he has ball in hand.”
Hull’s number seven also commented on the intensity of pre-season so far, thanks partly to the introduction of a new head-coach.
“Just like every year, this one has been tough. But myself and the lads are in a really good place at the moment and ready for the final push before the season starts.
“Everyone seems to have stepped it up a gear – there is definitely a higher intensity than what there has been over the last couple of years, possibly because we’ve all got to do that little bit more to catch the eye of a new coach incharge. I feel like we have probably carried on where we left off in 2020 having finished the season pretty strong with some big performances.
“We have squeezed the most out of every session that we have done which is a massive effort.”
On Hodgson, Sneyd added: “We’ve spent quite a bit of time discussing what we as players felt is the best for us, rather than just being told what to do. My strengths are on the opposite scale of where Josh’s are, so we’ve been figuring out what is the best way to play and get the best out of both of us. So on that side of things, Brett has been really helpful.
“He definitely knows what he is talking about and he is open to discussion as well which is good – if he tells us to do something which we feel might not be working, he is open to hearing other ideas.”
