Brett Hodgson explained that his victory over Wigan Warriors was “a win built on character” as his side made is six home wins in a row on Saturday afternoon.

Hull claimed a memorable 31-22 victory over next week’s Challenge Cup Finalists at the MKM Stadium, defeating the Warriors on home soil for the first time in almost five years.

Speaking after the game, Hodgson said: “That is a win built on a lot of character – we were down to 14 men in the closing stages of that game.

“Players were playing injured and sore, and the fact that there was a period where Wigan were in control of the game in that second-half makes it all the more pleasing that we held firm.

“Going into half-time, the score line didn’t reflect our dominance, but to be fair to Wigan, they came to play. They threw everything at us, but we had all of the answers.”

He continued: “Guys like Bevan French and Jai Field are always going to hurt you at some stage, but we were willing to get numbers around them and stop them getting over the line.

“They’re very difficult to score against, so to execute those plays like we did was superb to see.

“And it was great to hear the crowd get us home too, they were unbelievable today.”

And Hodgson praised both his spine players in the win, and Adam Swift who bagged a brace of tries on his return to action.

“We had a good week to be able to respond and work on our spine; I though Josh and Luke went really well with what they did today, and Jake was superb at the back. The three of them with Danny Houghton were really influential.”

“Just like Galey, Swifty was incredible disappointed to be left out next week but he responded really well with a couple of lovely finishes in the first half.”

On the injury front, he added: “Ligi looks like he’s picked up a PCL (knee) – he is a tough bloke so for him not being able to get back out onto the field is concerning. However, we don’t know on the severity at this stage.

“Jordan Lane got a stinger in his shoulder which didn’t ease off. And Carlos’s hamstring tightened up but we don’t know if its anything major at this stage.”
