Match Report: Huddersfield Giants 24-16 Hull FC

The match report as Hull FC lose to Huddersfield in the Challenge Cup Quarter-FInals.

Match Report News

The Black & Whites fell short in their Betfred Challenge Cup Quarter-Final clash against Huddersfield Giants on Saturday afternoon, going down 24-16 at the John Smith’s Stadium.

A masterclass from Giants full-back Tui Lolohea saw the West Yorkshire side book their semi-final spot at the expense of Brett Hodgson’s side, who found themselves as second best for long periods of the contest.

A first-half score from Manu Ma’u followed by a try after the restart from Andre Savelio ensured that FC remained in the contest, but Darnell McIntosh’s try in the final stages of the match wasn’t enough to ignite a late comeback.

Team News

Brett Hodgson made a couple of changes to the side that played away to Wigan last week, Josh Reynolds and Kane Evans returned to the matchday squad after recovering from injuries, replacing Jordan Lane and Connor Wynne.

The Match

Hull started well with an early chance for Vulikijapani in the opening minutes, but the centre was unable to capture the ball after a clever kick from Jake Connor into the corner.

Huddersfield opened the scoring, Ricky Leutele did well to ground the ball in the corner despite efforts from McIntosh. The home side’s lead was extended after Lolohea converted a penalty 20 minutes in.

Josh Reynolds made an instant impact coming off the bench; a smart kick forced a dropout, and the following set another kick set up Manu Ma’u who pounced on the grubber to score.

The Giants responded with 10 minutes to go in the half, with Chris McQueen collecting a grubber kick from Lolohea, The fullback kicked another penalty just before the break.

HALF TIME: Huddersfield 16-6 Hull FC

Andre Savelio scored the first try of the second half, doing well to spin out of a tackle before grounding the ball.

Another chance came for Hull following a Huddersfield error, Josh Griffin picked up a loose ball and ran 50 metres but was caught just short of the try line. Lolohea extended the Giant’s lead at the hour mark, making the most of a break from Luke Yates.

The evening would then get worse for the Black & White’s as Andre Savelio left the field due to an injury. Tui Lolohea kept up his 100% kicking record, converting another penalty with 10 minutes on the clock.

In the final 5 minutes, Darnell McIntosh would get a try against his former club, but it wouldn’t be enough for Hull who fell to a 24-16 defeat in the Challenge Cup Quarter-Finals.
