The report as Hull FC Academy suffered defeat away to Castleford

Match Report News

The Hull FC Academy was humbled by Castleford Tigers this evening, suffering a disappointing 50-12 defeat at Lock Lane.

Sam Hall, Louis Collinson and Brad Graham all scored braces to help Castleford onto victory, whilst there were also scores for Will Shaw, Josh Milthorpe and Adam Rusling.

Callum Rutland was on the scoresheet again for the Black & Whites, backing up from his double last time out. Sports College student Davy Litten scored an impressive second half try, which served only as a consolation for the visitors.

The Match

The first few minutes set the tone for the match, with Castleford opening the scoring through Hall on the powerplay underneath the sticks after just three minutes.

Graham doubled the hosts’ lead not long afterwards, leaping highest to claim a kick before dotting down in the left corner.

Caelum Jordan made it a hat-trick of conversions inside 25 minutes, adding the extras to Hall’s second try of the match.

At 18-0, Hull’s youngsters were facing an uphill struggle against a dominant Castleford side, but Rutland’s try on the half hour mark gave the visitors something to cheer about as the halfback stretched out an arm to score.

Shaw’s try just shy of half-time dealt FC a major blow psychologically, though, taking a scoot out of dummy half from close range to score under the uprights.

HALF-TIME: Tigers 24-6 Hull

Despite an encouraging opening set in the second half from Hull, it didn’t take long for Castleford to probe FC’s defence again. A sweeping move from right to left saw Graham draw in the winger before providing a simple pass to Milthorpe, who scored in the corner.

The result was put beyond any doubt when Graham stepped inside and planted the ball firmly down for his second of the game.

Collinson kept the scoreboard ticking with a quickfire double. First, he profited from an offload close to the Hull try line, before running a great line and piercing his way through the Black & Whites’ defence.

With ten minutes to go, the game may have been up but Hull didn’t throw the towel in. A hanging Hookem kick was enthusiastically chased down by Litten, who did superbly well to take it on the full, as well as sidestep one defender and score to the left of the sticks.

But it was the Tigers who had the final say – a swift break down the right edge caught Hull’s defence out and Rusling recieved the pass on the inside to wrap up the game.
