Wakefield Academy Prove Too Strong For FC’s Youngsters

The report from Hull FC Academy’s first outing of 2021

Match Report News

Hull FC Academy were beaten 32-14 by a spirited Wakefield Trinity Academy at the Mobile Rocket Stadium this afternoon.

Jude Ferreira scored a brace, with Charlie Severs scoring Hull’s other try.

However, in their first outing since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, the Black & Whites’ academy fell short in West Yorkshire.

After three straight sets on the Hull line, the pressure eventually told and Wakefield drew first blood. The ball was shifted to the right and Harrison Burrows found room to score in the corner.

After dropping the kick-off restart, Wakefield found themselves behind within the blink of an eye. Severs profited from an offload beneath the sticks, and Hookem notched the conversion.

With plenty of heavy artillery in the forwards, Wakefield were winning the arm wrestle. One of the biggest players on the field, Sam Eseh, managed to offload the ball to Isaac Shaw and he powered his way over the try line.

Trinity added a cushion to their lead when Lewis Murphy claimed a kick on his own 10 metre line before racing away down the left edge to finish a sensational individual try.

Hull continued to make a contest of it, though. Ferreira bumped off several tacklers to ground the ball and reduce the deficit just before the interval.

HALF-TIME: Hull 10-16 Trinity

Ill discipline cost Hull a fourth try early in the second half. Following a penalty, Jay Hardwood-Scriven ran strongly enough to power over the whitewash.

Wakefield extended their lead ten minutes later when Joshua Leeson coasted through a gaping hole on Hull’s try line, and Murphy dived in for his second try when Robbie Butterworth floated a delightful pass out wide.

The visitors ensured they had the final say, though. Despite seeing precious little of the football on Wakefield’s try line throughout the match, Hull did make sure they took advantage of their goodball sets. Ferreira was on the end of a nice move in the closing stages, but it was too large a mountain to climb for the Black & Whites at that stage.
