Challenge Cup winner Albert Kelly and his family will return to Australia next week after confirmation of a season ending hamstring injury.

The half-back has asked for permission for an early release from his contract to return home down under earlier than planned to re-unite with his family and prepare for other opportunities.

Kelly confirmed in June that he would be leaving the club at the end of the season to take his family home to Australia after six years in the city, representing both Hull Kingston Rovers and Hull FC.

It had been hoped that the 29-year-old would enjoy a final swansong for the Black & Whites, including a reunion this week against his former team, but unfortunately the reoccurrence of a hamstring injury has ruled him out until the end of the season.

An emotional Kelly informed his teammates last week after enjoying his time in Hull, but is now looking forward to relocating his family back on home shores.

“The family is really excited about going home and our family back home are looking forward to seeing us all again,” he said.

“I am really disappointed that I will not get to pull on the black and white jersey one last time, but unfortunately I’m just not right to play yet.

“I would have loved to get out there against Hull KR, my old club, as the derbies are always special games and Hull has been a great club for me.

“I’m very grateful to the club for everything they have done for me and allowing me and my family to head home and get settled before we embark on the next chapter in our lives.”

Kelly continued, “Hull will always be a special place for us, we have made some great memories and some great friends at both clubs.

“We had our son here, so it will always be special to us and perhaps one day we will comeback with him when the kids are older, watch a few games and show them where he is from.

“I’d like to wish all the boys and the staff the best of luck for the future and thank everyone who has supported us during our time in Hull.”

Everyone at Hull FC would like to wish Albert, Tia, Brida, Bayla and Boston the very best on their journey home and thank them for their contribution to the club.
