In the latest of our Hull FC Women’s Player in Focus pieces, find out more about centre Hannah McConaughy, formerly of both East & West Hull ARLFC.
Tell us about how you are enjoying playing for the Hull FC Women?
After 10 years out, I decided to make a comeback to Women’s Rugby League in honour of a good friend who sadly passed away in December last year. It’s honestly been the best thing I’ve done in a long time! I was made to feel welcome and part of the team almost right away which is a testament to all the staff and players involved.
How are you finding life and training at the minute during the COVID-19 pandemic?
Obviously it’s been hard for everyone adapting to new ways of working/ training in order to get through the pandemic, however being a key worker and having a great support network professionally and personally, I am very fortunate to have made the best out of a bad situation allowing me time to concentrate on any areas for improvement, mainly fitness.
What are your goals for when the new season begins?
To ensure team morale remains high. Maintain a good level of fitness and to become stronger and fitter both physically and mentally keeping the positive vibes throughout the team and the season.
A few of the girls have recently mentioned that the bond is at a high in the group, how do you keep this with the current situation of Covid 19?
Our coach Sam has been an asset to the team during the pandemic. He’s come up with new and creative ways for us to train, work together and stay in touch utilizing modern day technology. We train three times a week via Zoom, we are set extra challenges outside of this and we have group chats where we can all support each other 24/7.
How do you measure improvements in the group, and what improvements have you witnessed?
From what I’ve witnessed, the teams bigger and stronger than ever! We all work hard for each other and I’m excited for us to demonstrate this with the team on the pitch. Our coaching staff have set some great fitness programs and challenges whereby we can all measure our progress so we can see visually just how much we’ve improved which in turn creates healthy competition between the players.
