Jake Connor has expressed his excitement ahead of his involvement in the Downer Rugby League World Cup 9s this weekend in Sydney.
Connor will line up for England in the competition at the Bankwest Stadium in Sydney after being named as one of the 11 representatives ahead of the Great Britain tour starting next week.
Speaking at the launch event in Australia, Connor said: “I can’t wait for this weekend. I’ve played a little bit of 9s before when I was at Huddersfield Academy. It was a great concept to be involved with and throw the ball about a lot.
“I’m not the fastest player so I’m a little bit nervous about all these fast players bopping around but hopefully I get the chance to show what I can do with ball in hand.
“There seems to be a lot of media attention so hopefully there’s going to be a big crowd and a great atmosphere.”
And Connor admitted that he will be keeping a keen eye on new teammate Ligi Sao, who will represent Samoa in the competition before heading to the UK to join up with his new Hull FC teammates.
“Obviously one of our new recruits (Ligi Sao) is going to be in action so it’ll be a good chance to see what he can offer.
“Hopefully I get the chance to go up against him at some point.”
Connor added: “I was carrying a few little niggles over the 2019 season so the last three of four weeks has given me chance to recharge the batteries ahead of the internationals.
“I’m ecstatic to be in the Great Britain squad too. Just to be included in the squad is a proud moment for me, and if I get selected to play I’ll go out there and do my best.
“Obviously we know that Tonga are a big powerful outfit, and New Zealand have a few new faces that will be hoping to prove a point so we’re expecting some really tough fixtures.”
