Joe founded community club Holderness Vikings 26 years ago and they are one of the leading community clubs in the area,
The Vikings have progressed over the 26-year period from having just one age group to having age groups throughout and also an open age side.
Former Hull FC man James Cunningham rose through the ranks at the Vikings and Joe’s grandsons Adam and Ben Dent cut their teeth with Holderness before going on to play for York.
Along with watching the Black and Whites from 1948 when Australia took on Hull, Joe is still involved with Holderness and has taken up numerous roles in the past, too.
He said: “I’ve had various roles at the club - I’ve even been chairman a couple of times! But originally it was just one group - Under-9s - and we got more teams over the years and now we’ve got a lot of teams.
“Adam and Ben both made it when they played for York and that all came about from when I used to look after them when they were younger and with me being a rugby fan I got them to play rugby!”
The great work done in community rugby league will be showcased this Friday at the club’s first-ever Community Week game, which will also see the crowning of the inaugural Hull FC Community Clubman of the Year, sponsored by The Paint and Body Shop.
Joe is pleased that the reigning Challenge Cup holders are recognisiing community rugby league on Friday night and highlights the importance of the sport in the city.
“It’s very good that Hull FC are doing stuff for community rugby league as it’s very important that it’s remembered,” he said.
“We’ve (Holderness) have been down a few times on match days and it’s great that the young kids get the chance to walk out with the players who are their heroes.
“Hull has always been a rugby league city and the community game is an integral part of it as kids will go on to play for one of the clubs in the city. It’s important we celebrate this week as much as we can.”
