Mark Minichiello heaped praise on his side after Hull booked their place in the semi-finals of the Challenge Cup at the hands of Castleford Tigers.

Hull were still without captain Gareth Ellis and the 2016 Lance Todd Trophy winner Marc Sneyd against arguably the toughest opponents left in the draw.

Minichiello, who recently signed a new deal with the Black and Whites, was thrilled to help book Hull’s place in the last four at the expense of the table topping Tigers.

“To get over the top of a great team like Cas is very pleasing. A lot of people are talking them (Castleford) up and they are playing really well but we knew if we played the best we could that we could get a result,” he said.

“It was extremely hot out there, especially in the first half and it certainly sapped a lot of us,.

“We started the game really well and our outside backs were outstanding getting us going forward and we played off the back of that.

“We play our best football when we’re playing through the ruck and up tempo. We wanted to do that and play our own game today and I thought we controlled the game really well. When we play like that we have some dangerous players that are hard to handle.”

This victory marks three straight wins for the Airlie Birds against some of Super League’s top sides, with the spring firmly back in the step of Lee Radford’s men leading into a crucial part of the season.

Having claimed three successive victories, Minichiello identified confidence as a key in Hull’s bid for further success.

“The confidence in the squad is building and going in the right direction,” he said.

“Hopefully we’re coming into a good run leading into the business end of the season.

“Confidence is a great thing and if we keep playing well it should put us in good stead.”
