RADFORD: OUR SECOND HALF EFFORTS DESERVED MORE

By Tom Stewart | 17/05/2014

Whilst he had no qualms about the final result, Hull FC head coach Lee Radford felt his sides second half comeback with just 12-men deserved some reward in a ‘typical’ Hull derby.

The Black and Whites fell in the end to a 38-24 defeat after Hull KR ran in two late tries against a run down side that had given it their all to ensure the Robins suffered a real scare, having played the final half an hour with 12-men after Jason Crookes saw red.

Tries from an impressive Feka Paleaaesina and Danny Houghton pulled their side back to within two points and Radford was pleased with the response from his players.

“I thought the overall effort when we were down to twelve was fantastic and we probably deserved something out of the game,” he told the post-match press conference.

“It was a red card, some weeks you get those decisions and other weeks you don’t, but I was pleased with the way my team showed the determination to get back into the game.

“At 26-24, I thought we were going to go on and win the game. It was a typical derby, really gritty and a competitive game across the park and we have to know tap into the energy and enthusiasm that we showed when we were reduced to 12-men and bring that to the party to turn our results around.”

He added, “There was plenty of effort in black and white, or black and aboriginal today, which is very pleasing as a coach, but today just wasn’t to be our day.”

One of the stand out performers was try scorer Paleaaesina who enjoyed a long spell in the match that was full of impact and aggression, pleasing a large Magic Weekend crowd and Radford was full of praise for the former New Zealand international.

He said, “Feka was outstanding when he came on, he has phenomenal character and was a real rock out there today.

“He did exactly what we needed him to do which was give us a lift and a real shot in the arm. He fired us up and the crowd then got on the back of that, as players that gives you an extra edge.

“I thought Aaron Heremaia was also great when he came on which is pleasing and we now have to carry that in to next week.”
